Special Education

The team for 2009 comprises of a Special Needs coordinator, a Special Needs teacher and .seven Learning Assistants.

The Learning Assistants support students with learning or behavioural needs either in the class, the STAR room or off site settings, dependent on the needs of the students.  The Special Needs teacher assists with preparing programmes and units of work for students and supports the teachers and learning assistants with resources, expertise and targeted teaching.  The Special Needs coordinator ensures the smooth overall running of these programmes.

A Special Needs Coordinator oversees the Gifted and Talented programmes.  Our programmes are based on the REACH model which involves students who have been identified as having high levels of potential.  This model aims to generate a high level of interest in learning, to develop tools of thought, to develop intellectual and creative potential and to foster social emotional and ethical development.  Students are brought together in the context of meeting others like one self.  Referral is made by the classroom teacher or at parental request.

Students involved in enrichment classes maybe withdrawn from their classroom setting for a morning,  During this time a specialist teacher will work with the students to extend their high order thinking and skills.  We have offered enrichment classes in Literacy, Numeracy, the Arts and Science.  At times students will go off site for enrichment activities.

A teacher is responsible for Reading Recovery in the school.  This is a programme, which is designed to support students with literacy after being identified through the 6-year observation survey as needing support with literacy tasks.  The students are withdrawn from their classroom and receive individual teaching daily for up to twenty weeks.

We run programmes to support students with specific learning difficulties in both maths and literacy.
