Welcome to the 'Kapa Haka for Ashgrove School' page

Ngā Whetu o te Kura Ashgrove (The Ashgrove Stars) Is made up of approximately 50 year 3-8 akonga (students). Our tamariki work together in a tuakana-teina relationship. This integral part of traditional Māori society provides a buddy system where the more experienced tuakana learner helps and guides the less experienced teina.

Our learning is focused on Māori culture, language and values as well as developing the concept of tūrangawaewae (belonging through kinship and whakapapa). Ngā Whetu o te Kura Ashgrove learn and perform predominantly Ngāi Tahu waiata as an acknowledgement to our local iwi.

Ngā Whetu o te Kura Ashgrove practice every Monday afternoon under the leadership of Whaea Lydia Dixon. They perform for our local community at events including the North Canterbury Kapa Haka celebration of Kā Matakura o Ruataniwha Festival at Ohoka School Hall.

The stands of the rope that binds man
Even though it is battered by the rain
And scorched by the sun
The rope made of love
Will always hold strong

They (you) have arrived
Visitors to this place
Called in welcome
By this gathering

The stands of the rope that binds man
Even though it is battered by the rain
And scorched by the sun
The rope made of love
Will always hold strong

Come together
Join as one
So that the tie may be strong
Of this family

The stands of the rope that binds man
Even though it is battered by the rain
And scorched by the sun
The rope made of love
Will always hold strong
